VOLUNTEER COMMUNICATIONS & MEDIA MANAGER

DAKTARI is looking for someone who is eager to tell our story to the world, someone who loves to wordsmith, and someone with an eye for graphic design. The communications & media manager is the voice of DAKTARI and we are looking for someone excited to take on the challenge of describing our work to a big and variable audience in a fun and engaging way.

Part of your role is to tell everyone what is happening at DAKTARI every day. That means you have a front-row seat to all of the exciting things happening at the camp!

Your job will include

  • Managing DAKTARI’s accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, including posting content daily
  • Keeping up to date with all current marketing trends and set up campaigns accordingly
  • Creating media and marketing content for DAKTARI including brochures, merchandise, photos, and videos
  • You are the link between DAKTARI and the agents. Send them monthly newsletters, maintain a good relationship and keep our listings up to date
  • Writing articles for newsletters and newspapers
  • Maintaining DAKTARI’s brand across all promotional materials and enforcing its use throughout the organisation
  • Updating and improving DAKTARI’s website

Criteria

  • You must be comfortable working with Mac computers
  • You must be able to meet deadlines and manage your time well
  • You must have strong writing skills and be able to work independently
  • Previous marketing or communications experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience with Adobe software is strongly preferred, specifically Photoshop, InDesign and/or Fireworks
  • Experience with WordPress is highly recommended
  • Photography experience and/or experience making videos is a huge plus.

VOLUNTEER CORPORATE FUNDRAISING MANAGER

As a nonprofit organisation, DAKTARI is always looking for opportunities for funding, either to sustain our programs or grow them. We need someone who can assist our directors with applying for grants and reporting back on those we receive.

You will learn everything there is to know about DAKTARI and put that knowledge into proposals and reports. Fundraising is a competitive area with many challenges. You will be using DAKTARI’s proposal to apply for grants from corporates, organisations and foundations. You will have to use specific software to manage DAKTARI’s fundraising. This will help you set goals, reminders and deadlines.

Be aware that the volunteer visa application with the South African Embassy of your country is a long process. You must therefore apply for the position at least minimum 6 months in advance.

Your job will include

  • Working with directors to create and update proposals for potential funders
  • Researching and identifying possible funding opportunities
  • Working with the marketing manager to create strategic campaigns
  • Preparing reports for our funders on use of funds
    Compiling data about DAKTARI’s activities
  • Assisting the directors with monitoring and evaluation data to measure DAKTARI’s impact

Criteria

  • You must be comfortable with Mac computers and Microsoft Office
  • You must be confident telephoning potential donors
  • Strong communications skills, especially in writing
  • Strong research skills
  • Previous experience in fundraising is a huge plus

VOLUNTEER OUTREACH MANAGER

The DAKTARI Outreach Program is an integral part of our work. This program reinforces the impact we have on the children that come to DAKTARI. We also expand our impact by empowering the local community members to lift themselves out of poverty. Your job will be to maximise this impact in ways that excite the students and community members.

This position allows you to get fully immersed in the local culture and help the communities tackle poverty. You and your local Outreach Assistant will be working closely with members of the community and get to know them very well.

Your job will include

  • Traveling to a local secondary school and teaching the weekly Eco-Club (after school lessons on the environment)
  • Creating and updating lesson plans for the Eco-Clubs – they will need to be engaging and fun for the students
  • Coordinating the outreach campaigns and prepare engaging and impactful lessons for the students
  • Community empowerment activities, including job training workshops
  • Looking for ways to measure and analyse your impact in the community
  • Follow up our community impact statistics and analysis
  • Organise Village Tours and Home Stays
  • Assist with the workload alongside our local Outreach Assistant

Criteria

  • You must hold an international driving license and be prepared to drive out to schools by yourself
  • You must have good time and staff management skills and the ability to focus on several projects at once
  • You should be confident in preparing and teaching lessons to children who are not used to paying attention or having fun in class
  • Experience teaching individuals whose native language is not English is strongly preferred
  • Having previous intercultural experiences or having experienced an underprivileged African classroom is a huge plus

Long term volunteer with wild animal

VOLUNTEER WILDLIFE ANIMAL CARE MANAGER

MINIMUM 9 MONTHS – Contact us for available starting dates.

The Wildlife and Orphanage Manager will ensure the health and wellbeing of the animals in camp. He/she will be responsible for maintenance/repairs of animal camp and for upkeep of animals in captivity.

Be aware that the volunteer visa application with the South African Embassy of your country is a long process. You must therefore apply for the position at least minimum 6 months in advance.

Your job will include

  • Ensure the health and wellbeing of the animals in camp
  • Provide basic veterinary care when required
  • Notify the veterinarian in case of serious illness and administer medication as directed
  • Run the enrichment programme
  • Manage the volunteers and children whilst they undertake animal tasks
  • Identify and prepare animals for release
  • Improve enclosures
  • Run the orphan care department
  • Take over from the animal manager during his time off
  • Watch for births, breeding and unusual behavior, and record their observations
  • Take occasional visitors/sponsors on tours around the camp
  • Answer visitors’ and volunteers questions and educate them about specific animals and species in general
  • Keep the online database up to date with all animals and daily happenings
  • Keep stock of resources and order more when required
  • Keep up to date with scientific findings and developments in captive care guidelines
  • Work with the fundraising team to gain sponsorship for resources and materials

Criteria

  • Must have previous experience of working with wild animals
  • Gentle, quiet and patient with animals
  • Physically fit and no allergies to animals
  • Knowledge of ethics and welfare issues associated with captive animals
  • Good observational skills
  • Ability to cope with upsetting situations like working with injured or badly treated animals
  • Willingness to do dirty or unpleasant tasks
  • Good level of written and spoken English
  • Written communication skills
  • Computer skills and knowledge of office software.
  • The ability to work well as part of a team
  • The ability to manage international volunteers

PROJECT MANAGER

We are looking for a Project Manager. Someone with excellent people skills, who is able to adapt well with our international volunteers and local staff and lead the team to achieve greater results at DAKTARI. You will be responsible to analyse each department’s activities and assign tasks to make our project run smoothly and in the best way possible, bringing everyone together.

Your job will include defining and supervising projects goals and strategies for the organisation to succeed and develop. A few key responsibilities:

Criteria

● Vision: An effective project leader is often described as having a vision of where to go and the ability to articulate it.
● Communication: Project leadership calls for clear communication about goals, responsibility, performance, expectations and feedback.
● Integrity: The project manager’s actions set an example for the rest of the team members. He/she is ultimately responsible for setting ethical standards for the rest of the team.
● Enthusiasm/Passion: We tend to follow people with a can-do attitude, not those who are always negative and give us all the reasons for why something can’t be done.
● Empathy/Compassion: A good project manager needs to understand that there is life outside the workplace and that people are not machines without emotions.
