WHAT IS THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM?
The Youth Development Programme at DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage was launched in 2019 to support young people from surrounding rural communities in Limpopo, South Africa. The initiative was created to address one of the most pressing challenges facing the region: youth unemployment and the lack of opportunities for practical work experience after school.
Limpopo is one of South Africa’s most rural provinces and continues to face significant economic challenges. The provincial unemployment rate is around 29.8%, while youth are particularly vulnerable in the labour market. In districts such as Mopani, where many of DAKTARI’s partner communities are located, youth unemployment among people aged 15–34 is estimated at over 51%, highlighting the urgent need for programmes that provide skills, work experience, and career pathways. Across South Africa, youth unemployment remains among the highest in the world, with millions of young people struggling to gain their first work experience.
In rural areas like those surrounding Hoedspruit, many young people finish school but face limited employment opportunities due to a lack of job availability, professional networks, and practical training. Without opportunities to build experience, many youth remain trapped in a cycle where employers require experience for entry-level jobs but young people have no way to gain it.
The Youth Development Programme at DAKTARI directly addresses this gap. Each year, local young adults are recruited for a six-month work experience programme at the organisation. During this period, participants gain hands-on experience in a professional conservation and education environment. They contribute to the daily operations of DAKTARI while developing valuable workplace skills that strengthen their CV and improve their employability.
Participants are exposed to a variety of roles within the organisation, including environmental education, animal care, hospitality support, maintenance, and administration. This experience allows them to develop professional skills such as teamwork, communication, responsibility, and time management—skills that are essential in today’s job market.
In addition to practical work experience, the programme includes a series of life-skills and career development workshops designed to prepare participants for long-term employment and independence. Training topics include:
– Financial literacy and how to save money
– Job application skills and CV writing
– Climate change awareness and environmental responsibility
– Understanding wildlife crime and conservation challenges
– Personal development and goal setting
These workshops ensure that participants not only gain work experience but also develop the knowledge and confidence needed to plan for their future.
Youth empowerment is also closely linked to conservation. At DAKTARI, we believe that protecting wildlife and natural ecosystems requires strong local communities that benefit from conservation efforts. By investing in young people and providing them with skills and opportunities, the programme helps build a generation that values environmental protection while also pursuing sustainable livelihoods.
Since its launch, the Youth Development Programme has helped many participants gain confidence, develop professional skills, and take the first step toward employment or further education. Some graduates have gone on to secure jobs in tourism, conservation, and hospitality, while others continue their studies or pursue entrepreneurship.
At DAKTARI, supporting local youth is at the heart of our mission. By providing opportunities for learning, growth, and practical experience, we aim to empower young people to build brighter futures for themselves while becoming active stewards of their environment.
