What happened?
In recent months, South Africa experienced some of the most severe flooding seen in decades. In Limpopo Province, where DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage is based, relentless rainfall transformed roads into rivers, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted daily life for both communities and wildlife. What unfolded was a true test of resilience — and a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity, commitment, and compassion.
How did we react?
When the floods hit, the impact was immediate. Access roads were washed away, parts of our reserve became inaccessible, and essential facilities were damaged. Our priority was clear: ensure the safety of our staff, volunteers, and animals. Despite challenging conditions, our teams showed extraordinary determination. Through long days, they worked tirelessly to secure buildings, protect wildlife enclosures, and maintain care for the animals who depend on us every single day.
Resilience is not just a word at DAKTARI — it is a lived value. Our staff adapted quickly, finding creative solutions to continue our environmental education programmes and animal care activities despite limited resources. When vehicles could not pass, they walked. When power and water supplies were disrupted, they improvised. Their dedication ensured that our mission of conservation education and wildlife protection never stopped, even in the face of adversity.
Solidarity at all costs
The floods also highlighted the importance of community. DAKTARI is deeply rooted in the local area, and during this crisis, that connection proved invaluable. Neighbours supported one another, shared resources, and offered helping hands wherever possible. Together, we faced the aftermath of the Limpopo floods with courage and solidarity.
Equally overwhelming was the global response. Our donors, supporters, and friends from around the world rallied behind us with incredible generosity. Messages of encouragement, financial contributions, and offers of expertise poured in. Thanks to this immense support, we were able to begin critical repairs, restore access routes, and plan long-term solutions to strengthen our infrastructure against future extreme weather events.
What next steps?
Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters like flooding in South Africa. At DAKTARI, this experience reinforced the urgency of our work: educating young people about environmental responsibility, protecting wildlife habitats, and building resilient communities that can adapt to a changing world.
While the road to full recovery continues, we move forward with gratitude and renewed determination. The floods tested us, but they did not break us. They reminded us that resilience is built through teamwork, compassion, and shared purpose.
From all of us at DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage, thank you for standing with us through the storm. Together, we are stronger — and together, we continue to protect wildlife, empower youth, and inspire hope for a sustainable future in South Africa.
