Celebrating 20 years of impact: DAKTARI’s journey of education, conservation, and community in South Africa

This weekend, DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage celebrated 20 years of empowering children, protecting animals and inspiring volunteers from around the world. For two decades, our NGO in South Africa has combined environmental education and wildlife care to create a lasting impact in rural communities near the Kruger region.
Since 2006, DAKTARI’s mission has remained clear: to educate and inspire local children to value their environment and to stimulate community development. Through our bush school, underprivileged learners discover the importance of conservation, biodiversity, and respect for animals. At the same time, international volunteers support lessons, daily activities, and wildlife care, creating a unique bridge between cultures, education, and the environment.
Education at the heart of conservation
Education is the foundation of everything we do. Each week, local children join our environmental education programme, where they learn about ecosystems, endangered species, recycling, water conservation, and the role they can play in protecting South Africa’s natural heritage. Lessons are practical, interactive, and connected to real life in their communities.
By linking education and environment, we empower young people to see animals not as threats, but as essential parts of a balanced ecosystem. Many students arrive with limited access to environmental knowledge. They leave with greater confidence, stronger English skills, and a deeper understanding of conservation challenges in South Africa.
Over the past 20 years, thousands of children have passed through our bush school. Many have gone on to become ambassadors for wildlife protection in their villages, sharing what they learned about animals, sustainability, and the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.
Caring for animals, inspiring responsibility
Our wildlife orphanage is another key pillar of our mission. We provide lifelong care to rescued wild animals that cannot be released back into the wild. These animals play an essential educational role, helping children connect emotionally with wildlife.
Through supervised interactions, learners and volunteers discover the responsibility involved in animal care. They understand that protecting wildlife also means protecting habitats, fighting poaching and supporting ethical conservation practices in South Africa.
This hands-on experience transforms perceptions. Children who once feared certain animals begin to understand their behaviour and ecological value. Volunteers gain practical experience in wildlife care while contributing to a meaningful conservation project.
Volunteers driving impact in South Africa
Volunteers have always been at the core of DAKTARI’s success. Every year, people from across the globe join us in South Africa to teach, support animal care, and contribute to community outreach programmes. Their involvement strengthens our education initiatives and expands our environmental impact.
Volunteering at DAKTARI is more than a travel experience. It is a commitment to conservation, education, and sustainable development. By sharing skills and passion, volunteers help build a more environmentally aware generation.
20 years and beyond
Celebrating 20 years is not only about looking back. It is about reaffirming our mission to protect animals, promote education, and safeguard the environment in South Africa. Together with our children, volunteers, supporters, and partners, we will continue building a future where communities and wildlife thrive side by side.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of these 20 years of impact. The journey continues.
