At DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage, we believe that education goes beyond the classroom. It includes health. It includes dignity. And above all, it includes confidence.
Thanks to the generous support of a dedicated sponsor, DAKTARI can now provide 200 ready-made reusable sanitary pad kits to girls attending our environmental education program in South Africa. This initiative strengthens our commitment to girls’ empowerment, menstrual health education, and sustainable development.
Improving menstrual hygiene and girls’ confidence
Access to safe and reliable sanitary protection remains a challenge for many young girls in rural communities. Without proper menstrual hygiene products, girls may experience discomfort, embarrassment, or even miss school days. As a result, their education and self-confidence can suffer.
To address this issue, each reusable sanitary pad kit is carefully placed in the girls’ bags at the end of their week at DAKTARI. This ensures they return home not only with new knowledge about wildlife conservation and environmental protection, but also with practical support that improves their daily lives.
Moreover, these reusable sanitary pads provide:
-
Long-term menstrual hygiene solutions
-
Increased comfort and security
-
Greater independence and confidence
-
Reduced school absenteeism
Therefore, this program directly supports girls’ education and well-being in South Africa.
A sustainable solution for environmental protection
At DAKTARI, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. For this reason, choosing reusable sanitary pads was a natural decision.
Disposable sanitary products create significant waste and contribute to environmental pollution. In contrast, reusable pads drastically reduce waste while offering a cost-effective and durable alternative. Consequently, this initiative aligns perfectly with our environmental education mission.
By combining menstrual health support with eco-friendly solutions, we teach girls an important lesson: caring for themselves and caring for the planet go hand in hand.
In this way, a simple hygiene kit becomes a powerful tool for sustainability and long-term impact.
Professional training in menstrual health education
In addition, DAKTARI’s office team completed dedicated training on menstrual health, menstrual cycles, and hygiene management. After completing the program, the team earned certificates and strengthened their expertise in this essential topic.
This training allows our staff to:
-
Provide accurate menstrual health education
-
Address questions with sensitivity and respect
-
Break taboos surrounding menstruation
-
Create a safe and supportive learning environment
As a result, girls feel comfortable asking questions and discussing topics that are often considered taboo. Education, therefore, becomes a source of empowerment rather than discomfort.
Supporting girls beyond the classroom
At DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage, empowering girls means addressing both their educational and practical needs. Environmental education alone is not enough. Health and dignity matter just as much.
By providing reusable sanitary pad kits, delivering menstrual health training, and promoting sustainability, we ensure that every girl leaves camp feeling:
-
Supported
-
Respected
-
Confident
-
Equipped for the future
Ultimately, this initiative reflects our broader mission in South Africa: to create lasting impact through education, conservation, and community support.
Because when girls are empowered, communities grow stronger. And when sustainability guides our actions, the future becomes brighter for everyone.
