From sunrise animal care to inspiring young minds, every day at DAKTARI brings a new adventure.

Volunteering at DAKTARI is much more than a typical wildlife experience. Nestled in the heart of the South African bush, our volunteers join a unique programme that combines wildlife conservation, environmental education, and community development. No two days are the same, but each one is filled with meaningful work, unforgettable encounters, and plenty of fun.

Here’s what a typical week in the life of a DAKTARI volunteer looks like.

Monday: Welcoming Students to the Bush

The week begins early with a cup of tea or coffee as the bush comes to life around camp. Volunteers quickly get involved in animal care, helping to feed and look after DAKTARI’s rescued animals before breakfast.

After meeting the students, volunteers join educational activities with local children. Lessons focus on important life skills, wildlife conservation, and environmental awareness.

The afternoon continues with practical learning, from identifying animal tracks to understanding the important role species such as vultures and snakes play in the ecosystem.

By evening, everyone gathers for dinner before enjoying games and social activities that help volunteers and students get to know one another.

Tuesday: Wildlife Encounters and Future Aspirations

The day starts with an exciting game drive through the surrounding reserve. Volunteers may be lucky enough to spot lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and many other species in their natural habitat.

Back at camp, volunteers assist with animal care and educational sessions. The children participate in career guidance and public speaking workshops designed to help them build confidence and explore future opportunities.

One of the highlights of the day is the art lesson, where children draw their dreams and aspirations for the future. It is a powerful reminder of the impact education can have on young lives.

As night falls, volunteers and students embark on a thrilling night safari within the wildlife orphanage, experiencing the bush from a completely different perspective.

Wednesday: Learning About Our Planet

Midweek focuses on environmental education. Lessons cover important topics such as ecosystems, climate change, renewable energy, and sustainability.

Volunteers help facilitate activities and interactive games that make learning fun and engaging. Watching children connect environmental challenges to their own communities is often one of the most rewarding aspects of the programme.

In the evening, educational discussions are balanced with relaxation as everyone enjoys a movie night together.

Thursday: Building a Better Future

Thursday highlights DAKTARI’s commitment to both conservation and personal development.

The morning begins with lessons about plastic pollution and environmental responsibility, followed by practical activities such as bush walks.

During the afternoon, students present what they have learned throughout the week. Volunteers often play an important role in encouraging and supporting the children as they build confidence speaking in front of others. They may also join our Eco Club and take part in educational activities beyond DAKTARI.

As the sun sets, everyone gathers around the campfire for a traditional South African bonfire evening, singing, dancing, and sharing unforgettable moments beneath the stars.

Friday: Celebrating Achievements

The final day of the student programme is filled with emotion and reflection.

After completing surveys and helping with camp activities, students rehearse and deliver presentations showcasing everything they have learned during the week. The award ceremony celebrates their achievements and growth.

For volunteers, it is a chance to witness the direct impact of their efforts. Watching students leave camp with new knowledge, greater confidence, and a renewed enthusiasm for conservation is often one of the most memorable moments of the entire experience.

The week concludes with animal care duties and preparations for the next group of young learners who will soon arrive.

More Than Just Volunteering and Travelling

A week at DAKTARI is a unique combination of wildlife conservation, environmental education, cultural exchange, and personal growth. Whether you’re feeding rescued animals, helping a child deliver their first presentation, spotting wildlife on a game drive, or dancing around the bonfire, every experience contributes to DAKTARI’s mission of creating a future where people and wildlife can thrive together.

For many volunteers, a single week quickly becomes one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives—and often leaves them wishing they could stay even longer.
