DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage has been a place of discovery, growth, and unforgettable encounters with nature. With the support of DAKTARI’s Youth Development Programme, Isaac and Caroline embarked on life-changing wildlife experiences that sparked personal growth and inspired their futures.
Isaac’s First Safari Adventure
Isaac could hardly contain his excitement. This was his very first safari at Tshukudu Game Lodge, supported by DAKTARI to ensure a safe and enriching experience. These excursions complemented his development at DAKTARI, where he would later grow from intern to Head Chef.
🐾 First Encounters in the Bush
The African bush stretched wide around him, alive with sounds and mystery. Birds called from the treetops, and the rustle of leaves hinted at hidden creatures nearby. Not long after arriving, Isaac experienced something unforgettable: he saw a rhino mother and her baby quietly moving through the grass. He stood perfectly still, mesmerized, watching them with wide eyes.
But the moment that truly stole his heart came when he met a cheetah named Duma.
Duma was calm, graceful, and incredibly close. Isaac even got to touch him—something he knew he would never forget. From that moment on, Duma became the highlight of his entire trip.
🌿 Wonders of the Safari
As the safari continued, Isaac saw more incredible animals: lions resting lazily in the shade, zebras grazing in elegant groups, impalas leaping effortlessly through the bush, and towering giraffes watching serenely from above. At one point, he climbed onto a rock and gazed over the land, feeling like a true explorer.
That evening was just as magical. There was a braai—a traditional South African barbecue—around a warm, glowing fire. Isaac eagerly helped with the cooking, proud to be part of it all. Later, he sat with the volunteers, talking, laughing, and even singing together under the starry sky.
🌄 Dawn Adventures with Duma
The next morning began early, at 5:00 AM. Still a little sleepy but full of anticipation, Isaac went on a special walk with Duma the cheetah. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the earthy scent of the bush. Along the way, he learned to identify animal tracks: hippos, lions, rhinos, and impalas. Each footprint told a story, and Isaac found it utterly fascinating.
After the walk, they returned to the lodge, where another comfortable room awaited him. But the adventure wasn’t over just yet…
On the journey back, as if to say a final goodbye, Isaac spotted another rhino in the distance. He smiled, knowing that this remarkable journey had given him memories he would treasure forever.

Caroline’s First Elephant Adventure
Caroline’s first visit to Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) was supported by DAKTARI, giving her hands-on exposure to elephants and wildlife care. Caroline’s heart raced with excitement, and she could hardly wait to meet the gentle giants she had always admired from afar.
🐘 Meeting the Elephants for the First Time
As she approached the enclosure, Caroline saw the elephants moving gracefully in the morning sun. Guided by the HERD team, she fed the elephants with special pellets, feeling their soft trunks wrap around her hands. The experience was magical — a mixture of wonder, respect, and joy that she would never forget.
☕ A Moment to Reflect
After feeding the elephants, Caroline enjoyed a quiet breakfast, savoring her coffee for a full hour. She reflected on the incredible animals she had just met and realized her dream of working with elephants could truly become her reality.
🌿 Inspired for the Future
The day at HERD inspired Caroline to pursue her passion further, guiding her toward a role as an elephant manager. She felt grateful to be part of DAKTARI, where she could contribute to wildlife care while growing both personally and professionally. Each moment she spent with the elephants reminded her why she chose this path.

Discovering Purpose at DAKTARI
Both Isaac and Caroline’s stories highlight the spirit of exploration, learning, and connection with nature that DAKTARI fosters. For Isaac, it was a journey from curious student to Head Chef and wildlife caretaker. For Caroline, it was the first step toward becoming an elephant manager, inspired by the giants she met at HERD.
At DAKTARI, every encounter is more than an adventure — it’s an opportunity to discover purpose, grow skills, and connect with the natural world in unforgettable ways.
