Rooted in the bush near Hoedspruit, DAKTARI has grown hand in hand with the surrounding community, building relationships that extend far beyond the classroom.
A Lovely Presence in Community Life
This past Easter holiday, DAKTARI proudly took part in the vibrant Saturday Farmers Market in Hoedspruit. Engaging with visitors, locals, and supporters, the team shared their mission, stories, and passion for environmental education and wildlife conservation.
The booth quickly became a lively and welcoming space, especially for younger visitors. Many children stopped by to colour their drawings, filling the area with creativity, laughter, and curiosity. These simple yet meaningful moments created opportunities to connect with families and inspire the next generation in a relaxed and joyful environment.

Growing Together Through Environmental Education
Each week, learners from surrounding schools participate in the Environmental Education Programme, spending time at the camp discovering wildlife, learning life skills, and developing a deeper respect for their natural heritage. These experiences are carefully designed to inspire children to become ambassadors for conservation within their own communities.
Beyond the camp, DAKTARI extends its reach through its Community Outreach initiatives. The ECO Club, one of our flagship programmes, brings together students after school to explore topics such as waste management and sustainable living. Through hands-on projects like clean-ups and tree planting, students actively contribute to improving their own communities.
In addition, the new Early Childhood Development initiative ensures that even younger children are introduced to learning environments that nurture curiosity, growth, and opportunity from an early age—laying the foundation for long-term impact.
Together, these programmes reflect a shared journey: one where education is not confined to a classroom but is carried into homes, schools, and throughout Hoedspruit.

Hand in Hand during Challenging Times and Looking Ahead Together
The strength of this connection was especially evident following the flooding in January 2026. During this difficult time, DAKTARI received an outpouring of support—not only from the Hoedspruit community, but also from partners and individuals around the world.
This collective response highlighted something powerful: DAKTARI is not working alone. DAKTARI is incredibly grateful for the continued support from local businesses, partners, and members of the Hoedspruit community. From donations and sponsorships to everyday encouragement, this local involvement plays a vital role in sustaining and growing the organisation’s impact.
This connection felt even more meaningful as DAKTARI celebrated its 20th anniversary last month, which was a milestone reflecting two decades of shared impact, growth, and support from the Hoedspruit community and beyond.
As DAKTARI continues its journey, its bond with Hoedspruit remains at the core of everything it does. We believe conservation is not just about protecting wildlife—it is about nurturing a community that grows stronger, together. 🌿
