WESSA Award

WESSA Award

The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) has a long-standing tradition of celebrating environmental champions whose work goes above and beyond to protect and educate about South Africa’s natural heritage. Every year, these awards highlight individuals, organisations, youth leaders, educators, and communities who are making real, sustained impact in conservation and environmental education across the country.

Michele’s Journey: From Vision to Impact

Being named a WESSA Award runner-up for the Individual category is a tremendous honour for Michele and for our whole team. This category recognises people whose personal dedication, leadership, and long-term contribution significantly advance environmental conservation and awareness in South Africa.

Since founding DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage, Michele has driven our mission with heart, courage, and vision. From rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned wildlife to empowering young people through education and hands‑on conservation work, her passion has shaped DAKTARI into a respected hub for environmental learning and community impact in Limpopo and beyond. Her vision has helped open doors for youth development, connected people of all ages to nature, and inspired countless visitors, volunteers, and supporters to care more deeply about wildlife and the world around us.

Michele’s work reflects not just a love for the environment, but a belief that education and opportunity are key to lasting change — something we see every day in our youth programs, internships, and outreach initiatives.

Celebrating a Shared Achievement

This award celebrates more than an individual — it honours a lifetime of commitment and the ripple effects of that commitment on generations of learners, conservationists, and nature‑lovers. It also highlights the importance of grassroots conservation efforts in shaping South Africa’s environmental future.

We are incredibly proud of Michèle and grateful to WESSA for recognising her efforts on this national platform.

Join us in congratulating Michèle on this remarkable achievement! Together, DAKTARI continues to strive toward a world where people care for wildlife, communities, and the environment — step by step, story by story.
