2 months ago, five students from France arrived at DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage full of excitement, curiosity, and a little uncertainty about what awaited us. Today, with only a few days remaining before our departure, we find ourselves looking back on an adventure that has exceeded every expectation.

What began as a marketing internship quickly became a life-changing experience filled with learning, friendship, wildlife, and unforgettable memories.

From Classroom to Marketing Office

As Marketing and Sales Techniques students from Tarbes, France, we made marketing a major part of our daily work. We helped manage social media communication, creating content and sharing the stories that make these projects so special.

We also represented DAKTARI at events such as the Hoedspruit Farmers Market, where we met visitors, sold merchandise, and raised awareness about DAKTARI’s mission. These experiences allowed us to develop valuable professional skills while contributing to a meaningful cause.

Learning Through Teaching

One of the most rewarding aspects of our internship was working with the children who attend DAKTARI’s environmental education programme.

Every week brought a new group of learners, each with different personalities and levels of English. This challenged us to adapt our teaching approach and helped us grow in confidence. Watching the children learn and engage with the lessons reminded us of the importance of DAKTARI’s educational work.

Special Moments with DAKTARI’s Animal Ambassadors

Caring for the animals was another memorable part of our daily routine. From cleaning enclosures to supporting their well-being, we had the opportunity to work closely with some incredible animals.

Our favourite was undoubtedly the bush baby, whose curious personality often led it to climb onto our shoulders while we worked. These small interactions created memories that we will treasure forever.

The People Who Made It Special

Beyond the work itself, it was the people who made this experience truly unforgettable. DAKTARI brought together volunteers, interns, and staff members from different countries and backgrounds, all united by a shared passion for conservation and education.

The evenings spent playing board games, sharing stories, and laughing together created friendships that we know will last long after our internship ends.

Discovering South Africa Beyond DAKTARI

Weekends also allowed us to explore South Africa. Two experiences stand out in particular.

The Village Tour offered a deeper understanding of the local communities and the impact of DAKTARI’s work. The warmth and enthusiasm of the children we met left a lasting impression on us.

Another highlight was our visit to Tshukudu, where we enjoyed a game drive and saw lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, and many other animals. The experience of getting close to a cheetah and ending the day around a traditional South African braai made it a truly unforgettable weekend.

A Goodbye That Isn’t Easy

As our internship comes to an end, we leave with far more than professional experience. We have gained new skills, unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation and environmental education.

Although it is difficult to say goodbye, we know that a part of us will always remain at DAKTARI. This has been the adventure of a lifetime, and one that we will never forget.
