Finding a first job can be challenging for young people, especially when they are unsure how to prepare for the workplace. At DAKTARI, our Job Hunting Programme gives young people the opportunity to develop practical skills, gain work experience, and build confidence for their future.
For 18-year-old Joseph, joining the programme was a chance to prepare for employment while discovering new skills through working with animals and nature.

Learning Skills for the Workplace
After recently finishing school, Joseph joined the programme to improve his job-hunting skills. He learned how to use email professionally, write cover letters, and create a proper CV.
But his experience went beyond preparing job applications. Through his daily responsibilities, Joseph learned the importance of teamwork, reliability, commitment, and a positive attitude at work.
“I learned how to work well and take on tasks and responsibilities,” he explains.

Learning Through Nature
Working with animals was one of Joseph’s favourite parts of the programme. He particularly enjoyed caring for the mice, an experience that allowed him to spend time in nature and understand the importance of caring for living beings.
At the same time, these practical responsibilities taught him valuable lessons about the workplace. He learned that even small tasks matter and that being reliable can make a difference to the whole team.
Joseph also developed a stronger understanding of professionalism, from arriving on time and working well with colleagues to taking responsibility when things do not go as planned.
“If I make a mistake, I take responsibility. I say I’m sorry and try to do better.”

Taking the Next Step
Today, Joseph feels more confident about applying for jobs and taking on new responsibilities. He leaves DAKTARI with practical experience, stronger job-hunting skills, and a better understanding of the qualities needed to become a responsible employee. He is also enjoying his time at DAKTARI alongside the other students in the Job Hunting Programme. Sharing the experience with other young people gives him the opportunity to learn from others, build friendships, and enjoy the journey together.
His journey shows that learning can happen in many ways. By connecting young people with nature, practical responsibilities, and opportunities to develop essential life skills, we can help them grow while giving them the tools to shape their own future.
At DAKTARI, we believe that when young people are given the opportunity to learn, experience, and take responsibility, they can build a brighter future — while becoming more aware of the world around them and their role in protecting it. 💚
