If you’re fascinated by wildlife conservation, you’ll have the opportunity to visit several renowned rehabilitation and conservation centres around Hoedspruit.

At HESC (Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre), you’ll learn about the conservation of endangered species and meet animals such as cheetahs, rhinos, wild dogs and vultures. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre offers a behind-the-scenes look at how injured and orphaned wildlife are rescued, rehabilitated and, whenever possible, released back into the wild.

For reptile enthusiasts, the Hoedspruit Reptile Centre provides hands-on educational experiences with snakes, crocodiles and other fascinating reptiles. At HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development), volunteers can observe rescued elephants, hear their inspiring rehabilitation stories and even enjoy the unforgettable experience of feeding these gentle giants under the guidance of their dedicated carers.

These excursions offer a rare opportunity to see conservation work first-hand while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges facing South Africa’s wildlife.

Volunteers can join guided day trips or overnight safaris in the world-famous Kruger National Park, searching for the Big Five while learning about animal behaviour, ecosystems and conservation from experienced guides. With an open safari vehicle, you’ll enjoy unobstructed views and plenty of opportunities for photography.

Looking for something even more unique? Ride through the African bush on horseback, where the quiet pace allows you to observe giraffes, zebras, antelope and many other animals in a completely different way. Limpopo and Mpumalanga are home to some of South Africa’s most spectacular scenery, and volunteers have the chance to experience it first-hand.

The Panorama Tour takes you along one of the country’s most scenic drives, stopping at iconic viewpoints overlooking the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest green canyons in the world. Along the way, you’ll visit famous landmarks such as God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels, with plenty of time to soak in the views and capture incredible photographs.

Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on the Blyde River Dam, where knowledgeable guides introduce the area’s rich natural history. As you cruise beneath towering cliffs and waterfalls, you may spot hippos, crocodiles, antelope, fish eagles and a wide variety of other birdlife.
